Chapter 12 Projects

INTERNET QoS
The Internet Traffic Report at http://www.internettrafficreport.com/main.htm provides statistics about data flowing over the Internet. For this project, connect to the site several times during a one-week period and record the statistics for the U.S. and one other region of the world. Read the FAQs at the site and answer the following questions:

  1. What is response time in relation to the Internet?

  2. How is response time measured for the Internet Traffic Report?

  3. What is a typical response time on the Internet?

  4. What is packet loss?

  5. What level of packet loss begins to reduce quality of service for the average Internet user?

  6. Based on the statistics that you collected over the one-week period, how would you describe the quality of service on the Internet? (Make sure that you provide your collected data to your instructor.)

LEGACY SYSTEMS

Some of the most pervasive legacy systems include IBM mainframes, AS/400s, Digital VAX, and HP3000 systems. Use the Web to research one of these legacy systems. Write a 1-2 page report that includes answers to the following questions:

  1. When was this computer system first introduced and when was it phased out?
  2. Over the course of its lifetime, approximately how many of these legacy systems were installed?
  3. How would you characterize the applications and tasks that these computers typically performed?
  4. Why do you expect that these computers still remain in service?
